Mar. 28, Feature - Former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel has had an unsuccessful run for the Democratic
Presidential nomination. He has barely raised any money and has failed to
garner much media attention, often shut out of debates.
As Senator, he played
an historic role unveiling the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam war, which
was one of the factors that lead the war to wind down. But his ardent anti-war
stance gave him little traction in the Democratic party this election.
Senator Gravel is now a member of the Libertarian
Party and he joined Election Unspun producer Leigh Ann Caldwell via telephone.
"I believe in peace, I believe in fairness, I believe it should represent
the people and not wall street and its not doing any of these things and
so I've tried to find a group that does, and I think the Libertarian Party
does that much more handsomely than the Democratic Party."
"They're opposed to the war - really opposed to the war. They're opposed
to going into it.. and they want to get out.."
"They've welcomed me, very enthusiastically. I can't believe the reaction.
And they haven't offered me anything other than being treated equally, which
was not the treatment I had with the Democrats. I was not treated fairly
or equally in the debates, in fact, they were part of the conspiracy to
cut me out of the debates, which started with the actions of General Electric
last September. "
