Apr. 25, Interview - With the possibility of a brokered convention looming over this year's presidential election, Election Unspun producer Karen Miller spoke with Bob Creamer, political
strategist and author of the book Stand Up Straight, Listen to Your Mother,
How Progressives Can Win. They talk about what a brokered convention looks
like.
"Well first off, we just got to be clear what its not. There are
a number of times when candidates have taken their candidacy all the way
to the convention, but the outcome was clear. And those are obviously not
so called brokered conventions.
The last one that we had in the United States that was really not decided
until the convention was 1960 when Kennedy got the nomination. And there he
ran a real live operation on the floor, they worked every delegation hard
to get swing votes, and I'm sure there was a fair amount of back room discussion
with leaders to try and cut the deal that ultimately yielded his nomination."
"..the term 'brokered' really just means that somebody helps broker
it, that is that deals are cut behind the scenes, among players. And its
true that those kind of things probably will go on in an attempt to persuade
undecided delegates to support the nominee."
That was Karen Miller speaking with Bob Creamer, political strategist.
