Apr. 3, Interview - The US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world and
the numbers of people in jail are only rising. The candidates have said
little of this epidemic, so Election Unspun producer Karen Miller spoke with
Prison Reform Advocate Naimi Black who says current national
policy has less to with prevention and more to do with profits.
"People are very mis-informed in general, about not just the over incarceration
but what goes on once you are incarcerated and therefore what happens when
people come out. We need to look at it. These people are human beings. Their
human rights are violated left, right and center. They're our brothers and
sisters. Until it really happens to you, it's hard to know that because it
is not what you see in everyday life."
"No country in history has handed over so many prisoners to private corporations."
"We need a new paradigm of healing
and transformation. We need people to sorta look back to where we used to
be; when we wanted to rehabilitate people and educated people and exert resources
and money in prevention and we are so far from that, it's scary.."
