Feb. 26, Interview - In addition to Connecticut, Obama received
a majority of Latino votes in Virginia and his home state of Illinois. But
Clinton's appeal to Latino voters is hard to overcome, especially in Texas, where the
Clinton's have strong ties to the state and where Latinos could make up a
quarter of voters. Obama's campaign is relying on their same grassroots
strategy: seeking out Latinos to be precinct captains at Texas' caucuses
and vying for the endorsement of Latino elected officials.
Texas State Representative
Rafael Anchia of West Dallas, a young up an coming politician, the son of Mexican
and Spanish immigrants. He says Obama is gaining the support of young Latino
voters.
"Young people like a young dynamic candidate, the son of an immigrant,
who talks about opportunity and who has been rock solid on Latino issues
like the War in Iraq, health care and comprehensive immigration reform and
finally the Dream Act. He scored big points at last week's Presidential debate
when he talked about the Dream Act."
Anchia says Obama needs to spend more time in
South Texas, a portion of the state which Hillary Clinton has picked up the
endorsements of most Latino officials and community leaders.
The Obama campaign says they have opened offices all through South Texas and are continuing their
on the ground outreach.
The Clinton campaign is continuing to focus on South
Texas, where she has the support of most Latino officials and organizations
there.
