August 1 - In an effort to increase participation on election day, a number of Get out the Vote efforts are under way to increase participation among those who participate the least. Rock the Vote to get youth to register, a 24 state voter registration drive focused on unmarried women, and The Respect my Vote, an effort to register young people ages 18 - 29 with out a college education are some examples.

The Respect my Vote drive is an initiative with rapper T.I. and hip hop activists. FSRN's Karen Miller spoke with Reverend Lenox Yearwood, head of the Hip Hop Caucus. Yearwood launched Vote or Die in 2004. They speak about this year's campaign.

The numbers are really just startling, 93% of young 18 and 29, who did not go to college, but were eligible to vote, did not vote at this years Super Tuesday... and in 2004, only 33% of non-college [educated] 18 to 29 year olds turned out to the polls. In contrast to the 61% of their college educated peers..

 

Interview: Rosa Clemente, Green Party Vice Presidential Candidate

This year, the Greens nominated organizer and hip-hop activist Rosa Clemente as their Vice-Presidential pick. Clemente spoke with KPFA's Davey D at the Green Party convention in Chicago about her selection and about trying to organize those who have been disenfranchised from the political process.
