Apr. 10, Headlines - On the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton claims that she is the only candidate
who will end the war in Iraq. She says opponent Barack
Obama just talks about ending the war. Clinton has been gradually shifting her position on the war
since she's begun campaigning for the Democratic nomination, now trying to
position herself as the anti-war candidate.
Jackie Speier, former California State Senator is heading to Washington. She
won the special election to replace Representative Tom
Lantos, who died of
cancer earlier this year. As a newcomer, Speier won't fulfill all of Lantos'
roles, such as Chairing the Foreign Affairs Committee. She will likely still
be learning her way around the Capital when she must face another election
- win a primary race in June and a general election in November.
John Tanner, the director of the voting rights section of the Department of
Justice until last year, has accepted a position in Alabama where he will develop
'how to' handbooks on getting Justice Department approval of election-law changes.
Tanner came under fire last year when he said quote "minorities don't become
elderly the way white people do. They die first." Tanner also oversaw the
DOJ as it pushed new voter ID laws and moved its focus away from minority voter
disenfranchisement and to voter fraud. Tanner will also be teaching at two
Alabama law schools.
