St. Paul police chief claims the timing his coincidence. One council member attempted, and failed, to derail the vote by proposing to spend the money on summer crime prevention.

John McCain spent the day denying a New York Times article that claimed McCain's close ties with a woman telecommunications lobbyists went beyond professional. The article insinuates that this relationship influenced his work on the Senate Commerce Committee.

"The question is whether they have access or unwarranted influence, and certainly no one ever had in my conduct of public life."

John McCainThe influence of lobbyists has been a central platform of John McCain since he was involved in the Keating 5 banking and loan scandal in the 80's. The Washington Post published their version of a similar article that included many of the same named and unnamed sources as the Times article.

The Change to Win federation, the labor coalition with 6 million members, announced its endorsement of Barack Obama. Four of the unions under the umbrella group had previously done so, while two had endorsed Hillary Clinton but they gave the nod to allow the federation endorse.
