Mar. 27, Interview - As the health care lobby might be a roadblock to reform. Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, Professor of Medicine at Harvard and Co-Founder of Physicians for National a National Health Program says one major player will benefit from proposed reforms.

It's the same group who is adamantly opposed to single payer health care, which Dr. Woolhandler discusses first.

"The major institutional challenge is overcoming the political and economic power of the private Health insurance industry. Insurance Industry spokesmen said that they completely and totally oppose national health insurance, its a life or death struggle for them. And of course, they are opposing national health insurance, they're lobbying hard with Republican and with the Democrats.."

Doctor with PatientHillary and Obama are far off from single payer. They are both saying universal health care but the plans they are proposing won't get us to universal health care. They are proposing mandate models. 'That will not work to get us to universal health care. It's been tried three times - Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington. It's in the process of failing again in the 2006 reform in Massachusetts.'

".. the private insurance industry actively supported the new Massachusetts health care reform which includes a very punitive mandate. When the mandate goes into effect, people who are unable, or unwilling to buy health insurance may be fined up to $2,500 per year. The government is stepping in and using its coercive power to tell individuals that they have to hand their money over to private health insurance companies. Obviously, the private health insurance industry is happy about that, it turns government into a debt collector for the private insurance industry."
