June 25 - The CIA's mistreatment of detainees at Guantanamo - and the Bush administration's authorization of such treatment - have brought condemnation from U.S. and international critics. Howard Salter of Citizens for Global Solutions spoke with Nathan Moore about where Barack Obama and John McCain stand.

For Senator Obama, he's been quite consistent on this issue. He's said that if he's elected we'll reject torture period. He said that we will not practice torture as policy... and that his administration would close down Gitmo [Guantanamo Bay].

.. one would think that John McCain should own this issue, if you will, from a political stand point. I think as many of your listeners know, John McCain was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He himself was tortured, the man cannot lift his arms barely because of the torture he received, yet he's flip flopped on this issue.

That was Howard Salter of Citizens for Global Solutions, speaking with Nathan Moore.

If you want to hear more about the Bush administration's authorization of torture at Guantanamo, listen to Pacifica Radio's live broadcast of the House Judiciary Committee hearing this Thursday morning at Pacifica.org.

Harpers Magazine Legal Affairs contributor Scott Horton says both candidates want to close Guantanamo and would ban torture techniques. But Horton says there is a real difference on how and why they would do so.
